Movements of fish in and out of two fisheries in Kent and West Sussex have been banned following outbreaks of Koi Herpesvirus disease.

The outbreaks, at Chartham Angling Society Lakes in Canterbury and Passies Ponds in Lancing, are not related.

The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) said the disease was found after samples were taken following fish deaths.

Cefas said there were no implications for human health.

But the disease affects all varieties of carp and can result in high rates of fish deaths.

The fisheries have been ordered to set up facilities for disinfection of angling equipment at all access points.

Chartham Angling Society's website says the lakes in Thruxted Lane will be closed for the rest of the season following confirmation of the "highly contagious" disease.

A special meeting has been called for 5 November at the Royal British Legion Hall in Chartham to answer members' questions.
