I have been missing for a while because I have been fishing at last - had some great looking fish.
It all started when a mate of mine Richard Summerville found a new water in Texas - cant be named yet (sorry) - I met up with another fella from the UK on the thursday to scout it out and to prebait ready for the weekend. Only a 6hr round trip (how's that for committment )
We arrived on the Friday and baited againg and got started.
A long wait was aticipated - No probs - Richard arrived and bagged a fish that night.
Quality we were well chuffed
A cold night ahead and we started a little fire to stay warm (thats allowed here in Texas)
Early in the morning my left hand rod screemed off with an absolute belter - could this be a new PB - I think so
Absolute class - this is a quality venue we are thinking. Not much more action except for a couple of 20s.
One other attraction were the locals - not only were they quality people but they loved a beer - i mean loved a beer and thought we were absolutley mental fishing for Carp (Trash fish)
They also laughed att he fire we had started and set about getting us some fire wood - I mean whole truck load. Complete with Chainsaw
We will be back
back the following week - no need to change the swims just add more bait and away we went
More 20s
Then there was this beauty
What a fish
Now you can see why we are keeping this little gema big stum lads...
We have had another couple of sessions and we have had another couple of 30s - Sorry no pics
A friend of mine flew over from the UK to sample Carp Fishing Texas style. What a great trip we had..
It all started last Wednesday when Andy flew in and I quickly got him to my local pub where he was promptly introduced to Shiner Bock - he quickly fell in love. Shiner is a local Texas Brew
On Thursday we went to Wallmart to get supplies and the plan was for us to fish a venue that I have been fishing - when we received a call from Jason J to say that the fishing at Emma was bang on - they had had lumps galore and so had Buff chris and Tracy and Keith Melrose - plans changed and it was off to Emma Long State Park
I finally got to meet JJ for the 1st time (what a pleasure) and his guests also from the UK - Shaun Harrison (Quest Baits) and Ron Keys. They ahve a quality write up coming so I am not going to steal thier thunder.
We set up at and got the bait going in - I had cats all night and then in the morning I had my 1st ever Emma Buff - unreal hey A new PB
36.5
Great stuff - now to get on with hopefully getting Andy a Buff.
The weather turned nasty and the wind was houling alnight from the north - cold - I mean freezing - we decided to call it quits and decided to travel and make plans whilst the weather was bad. Just as we were nearly finished packing up Andy's right hand rod took off to give Andy his new PB and a much sort after Buff.
43.2
Quality or what.
We set off for home and made plans for the rest of the week
We decided to go and fish venue no2 and arrived on Monday - baited up and got all set up only to hear the bad news about the Ice storm and we cut the trip short and were dissappointed to say the least (but hey we had Shiner to help us out)
After the worst of the ice we agreed to go back to Emma and fish it hard - took off and arrived to a deserted Emma and the parks guys asking if we were crazy as the weather was going to be nasty for that evening - Cold it was blinking cold - I had ice in the Bivvy.
The cat fish were driving me nuts - I did have a 10 lb Kitty though - nice fish.
Far to cold for Shiner so Tea and a nice hot stew was on the menu. Oh I forgot to say that on the 1st trip I had cooked and prepared a couple of Vindaloo currys (hot ) my lips are still tingling....
This is what we woke up to
I had a 23lb Buff and I alos lost a couple and Andy Lost one and then Andy caught his next PB
33.6 Common - pure class
The day turned out to be top quality
Emma at her best.
I had 22lb Buff and Andy got totally owned by a pure lump from the deep - Whilst packing up I had a great looking Buff
34.3
My Mate Andy had a blinder
Until Next time - by the way BIG E is what they all call me
BIG ENGLISH - I havent got a clue why ;D
Cheers
A New Venue - A New Species
The plan was to fish Lake Athens in E.Texas where we fish every so often - great looking water. This time we wasnt aware that the water level had risen quite a bit and the area we had planned on was to be found unfishable - so we decided to fisha new venue that has been waiting to be fished for a longtime - we headed off - just another 45 mins down the road - thats 2 and hlaf hors away from door to door.
We arrived at the venue to find out that the area we wanted to fish had been gated off and we had to pre book a camping site - we soon took care of business and got to look at the lake - Outstanding - full of Mussels all around the edge of the lake - the camping RV area was deserted - we had it all to ourselves. Staterd by marker floatingt he area to find we had anything from 6ft/8ft of water at 50 yards dropping to 20feet pukka.
We baited up heavil with spod mix and my trusty metod mix.
I chose to fish all three rods on the Methos and Tigers and plastic corn tipping 2 of the rods and one rod with 4 grains of Scopex flavored maize.
We knew that the lake had a weed problem so ob=ver the last few years grass carp were introduced into the water - by 4k over the last 3 years. We had no idea if there were any other species bit with all the surrounding waters holding Commons were were hopeful.
I was wanting a Grass carp
it didnt take long - Tigers doing the job
With a couple of cat fish caught
it was time to catch another Grasser
The scenery at the lake was amazing
On night 1 the wind was houling and it was hard to read if we had fish crashing or moving at all.
my mate landed a quality 18lb Grasser and I had another soon after.
As you can see lads its very comftable fishing - Gated Camping RV complex
Running water, electric, and Showers and toilets and a hut to put your stuff in if the weather does turn nasty - Not bad hey.
Another quality venue found and scouted with some instant results.
I will be off on my last 3 day trip for a while next weeked in seach of those big smallmouth Buffalo in Sth Texas at Emma Long Park.
I will keep you posted - this will be my last major session as its only a matter of weeks away to the birth of our second Daughter - Another new PB on the way Fellas Cheers ;D
I am sitting in the bivvy at Emma Long writing this first part.
After basking in the sunshine for the last 3 days and topping up the tan and watching Donnies nose get red - we woke this morning to a cold north wind and a cloudy sky.Just what we needed - Colder weather to bring the big boys in..
This was to be my last major session because of it getting closer to the birth of our second child ANOTHER PB on the way.
So we called the wives and they glady agreed that we should spend our Valentines Day and weekend with our true loves "our
Rods'.
This was going to be a big one - so Donnie and I planned but we didn't really realize how big this was gonna be......
Donnie arrived on Wed mid afternoon and secured the swim we had been chatting about all week long.
He set up and baited up heavily. The fish were crashing everywhere - I arrived at around 9pm hearing the fish crashing like crazy.
I set up and decided on which had become my style now, the method.
This was gonna be the big one and we were having loads of fish -

We said our goodbyes and Donnie and I made a plan to draw the fish that Keith had been baiting up for into our swim.
We put out large amounts of method balls in - an area of about the size of a tennis court.
At 11:30pm my left hand rod tore off and it was to be my New PB

We only have 3 more weeks to go for the birht of no 2 - after a busy week coaching and a crashed car - dont ask the mrs gave me the green flag to get out for one last time prior to baby.
My mate I fish with Richard Summerville - we plotted a session at the lake where we have been fishing over the winter.
The weather all week had been top class with highs in the near 80s and the evenings wernt getting below 45 - here we go.
I arrived on Friday afternoon at a familier swima nd decided to fish down the banka bit so as I could hit the channel - Spodded out a Maize, Hemp and chick peas and calf manor pellet see below.
And the method had been nailing em big time - so all 3 rods were method feedered up and away I went -
The hookbait was Tigers tipped with fake maize and Richards new flavored maize - scopex and a fruity flavor looked and smelled the dogs $%#&*'s
We had heard that the weather was going to change with the wind coming from the North - winds up to 25 mph = Richard arrived and we promptly got him sorted out after he had drank a couple of Shiners of course.
I cooked us some top draw chicken on our new mini BBQ - we built bonfire and settled in for the night. The weather was getting nasty - from near 80s to now nearly freezing - WTF was we doing.
Int he morning my right hand rod screemed off and I lent into it - this was a lump - I played for about 5 mins and then nothing - it got hung up "snag of the highest order WTF
Gutted - off it cama good fish lost - and so it continued just like that - I lost 5 fish to a snag on the left and on the right - cleaned me out. Richard had a beauty 30.12 his 5th 30 from the new water.
Great looking fish. Came on the new scopex maize as well. Top class.
I was continuing to oose fish after fish - it was getting colder - I mean cold. The wind was houling to make things worst.
I finally got a break after baing a new area and re setting my rods -
My next 30 from this lake that was now becoming heartbreak lake because of all the lost fish.
30.14
- it was that cold that all the nets had frozen - I thought my fingers had dropped off.
I then got another 29.8 sorry No pic it was too cold.
We settled in for a what was going to eb a very cold night - froze our backsides off - it was bitter.
I had to take off early in Sunday as I wa coaching early afternoon.
As we were packing up Richard had a great run and he landed a 28.10
another 2 x 30s and another couple of great high 20s from this great new water.
Well thats about it from me for a while, as I will be now sitting waiting for my next PB Robinson to arrive.
Cheers all.
Just when I thought I was done for a while -
Temps today are in the 80s not bad for March fellas - I managed to get a sneaky half day session in at a pond thats about 30 mins from me - this pond has produced commons up to 27lb and Koi up 18 and many ghost carp.
We have literally loads of these sort of venues and a lot of the lads have been doing the rounds.
This was my 1st outing to Ghostie as its known. Great little place.
My mate Donnie met me out there for a morning sess.

I use the Chub Stalkers for local ponds like this - they work a treat
A nice little 14lb common

More Cats to catch - keep you posted fellas.
Been MIA for a while fellas as our footie season is now well underway and we are having hard time of it this year.
Here is a story from this weekend
A Session gone badly wrong.
After a bad start to the week - Richard and I decided that we needed to fish this weekend - A sunday all day session turned into a Sat night / Sunday so we thought.
I drove to the lake on friday and prebaited a couple of swims that had some shade and then got back in time for my game on friday evening (this season hasnt been a good one fellas)after a bad defeat on Friday evening all I could think about was getting to the swim and relaxing and putting my head straight.
I arrived at the swim at 10ish with a couple of fish moving (great stuff)- at 2pm my right had rod peeled off and it was a great looking 20+ Common - pics later.
Richard arrived and I took off for some much needed food - we settled in for the night with our friend Shiner (local beer) - just a few.
Not a lot of movement and it was hotter than &*%^ - the lake was deadly quiet with not a ripple to be seen - We were given a fantastic firework show by one of the locals though.
At midnight we turned in for the night - and were waiting in anticipation. I was now getting seriously relaxed as - at 3am my right hand rod gave a bleep and then another - and yep you guessed it a Kity - I took of the kitty and got rebaited - my swim I had to get into the water - on went my crocs and i climed in - as I landed my right foot I felt this pain shoot up my leg F*** I said - I threw my rod and jump back onto the bank to suffer even more pain - Snake Bite - I thought - i had blood pouring out of my right foot - after placing my foot in the ice cooler with Shiner - I could now feel that I had indeed stood on something - I was yelping - I can tell you - I woke the entire lake up except for Richard.
I started trying to pull out whatever I had stuck in my foot with a pair of pliers - it wouldnt budge - my foot was swelling and blood was coming out - I yelled for Richard and Richard came over and couldnt believe what he was seeing - I cut away at my foot with a knife trying to get to whatever it was - Richard had a look, and could just get a little grip onto the end of the intruder.
He asked if I wanted for him to pull it out I said %^*& YEA.
With a sudden tug - out came a 1 1/2 barb off of a Catfish - ( great not only were they knicking my bait and tangling my lines but now they were laying booby traps. All we could think of - is there must have been a Catfish carcus in the lake - and yours truly found it.
Richard asked if I had a Tetnus shot lately - Don't Know as I was still yellping.
I phoned Shelley (the wife) and Shelley got on the computer and told me the remedy - pee on it Na I thought.
I phoned 911 and they told me that the nearest hospital was 12 miles away - Richard said No way was he going to let me go alone - so we both packed up and off we went - Richard - all I can say mate - is that your a star. Ypur rods had only been in the water for a matter of hours.
We were in the hospital for 2 hours and a Tetnus shot and clean up were went back to the lake - after stopping at the doughnut palace (bang went the diet).
We say for a while and drank our coffee and chatted and then we headed off home.
All I can say is that it wasnt very relaxing but I do know that Richard is a mate that I can rely on when in trouble.
Off to get my antibiotics now chaps.
