Im lifting this from a post on the BCSG site as its an important issue worth noting:
Layer Pits in Colchester, last year there was a spurious amount of fish deaths, so much so that the club seeked professional help by way of Spirex Aquatics, Dr Andrew Worthington.
He took various samples away but more importantly took various lake bed samples, these samples where sent to a laboratory for testing. Apart from coming back with information about depth of silt he came back with a concerning report about a sludge that is sitting on top of the silt.
The sludge and upper layers of silt contain large amounts of Fish faeces (poo) and volatile suspended solids. On further analyses the solids have found to be bird seeds.
As the two elements, seeds and poo break down together the use and burn up dissolved oxygen and give off high levels of carbon Dioxide. Normally at this time of year Oxygen levels should be at there highest, lets say 100% but due to this sludge the oxygen levels are below 60%, the fear being as the weather warms up etc is the oxygen levels going to drop further causing another fish kill.
The club has immediatly banned all seed baits etc, Party Blend, red band, pigeon conditioner etc and seed based groundbaits and method mixes..
Now im not a fish biologist or for that matter a aquatic specialist but i wonder how many other waters around the country are suffering this fate, at present Hemp is not banned but if the situation does not improve it will be next, makes you think doesn't it,
What about PVA, we know that PVA is made from a stable Carbon dioxide variant and that the melting of PVA is the product trying to turn back to its natural gas state via a liquid emulsion, the elements traveling up the water column turning back to gas when surfaced, does this add to the depletion of Oxygen too.
Ill leave you all to think about this one.
